Since its establishment in 1994, the Gallery has been housed in the former Municipal Baths of Chios, near the central square, Nikolaos Plastiras (formerly Vounaki). The building was designed in the mid-1930s by architect Ioannis Despotopoulos and completed in 1954. From then until the mid-1970s, it was used as public baths by the Municipality of Chios. From 1984 to 1994, it was renovated to house the Municipal Art Gallery of Chios, which opened in April 1994.
Since 1979, the building has been designated “a work of art requiring special state protection” (Ministerial Decision of the Ministry of Culture /1868/51007/ 27-08-1979 Government Gazette 764/B/07/09/1979) thanks to the combination of its simple modern morphology with the traditional carved “thymianousiki” stone used for centuries in the folk architecture of Chios.
The Art Gallery building will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to repair and restoration work. An exhibition featuring selected works from the Chios Municipal Art Gallery will be held at the nearby Homer Cultural Center.
