The Digitization Project
Identification, Documentation, and Online Presentation of the Collections of the Municipal Art Gallery of Chios
The project “Identification, recording, documentation, and online promotion of the works of art belonging to the Gallery’s collections” is part of the Municipality of Chios’ strategy to upgrade the Municipal Art Gallery, with the aim of transforming it into a modern, open, and dynamic center for culture and the arts in the heart of the city, accessible to both the local community and visitors to the island.
Key Implementation Axes
• Identification of Artworks
A unique identification number was assigned to each artwork, RFID tags were placed, and identification was carried out based on existing catalogs. A total of 7,000 artworks were included.
• Scientific Documentation
Each work was documented in the project’s specialized collection management system, enhancing its historical, artistic, and cultural value.
• Recording and Classification
The artworks were classified in the storage areas, their exact location was recorded, and a system was put in place to monitor their movement.
• Preparation for Exhibitions
Bilingual captions were created for 150 selected works from the permanent exhibition (the highlights of the collection).
• Photographing the Collections
The following were implemented:
- Professional photography of 300 works for use in digital applications.
- Non-professional photography of 7,000 works for documentation and recording purposes.
• Development of a Digital Platform
The TMS Collections and eMuseum systems from Gallery Systems were integrated and customized for the scientific documentation and online promotion of the collection.
• New Visual Identity
A new, modern image and online presence was created for the Municipal Art Gallery of Chios.
• Equipment & Infrastructure
RFID technologies and system management software were used to fully support the project.
The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, through the European Union – NextGenerationEU. It is part of sub-project No. 1 of the Action: “Recording, Documentation, Protection, and Online Promotion of the Collections of the Municipal Art Gallery of Chios,” under Axis 4.6: “Modernization and improvement of the resilience of key sectors of the country’s economy” of the Greek Recovery and Resilience Plan (ESAA), with code OPS TA 5190236.
